Image result for timescalesWhat are timescales? The definition that comes up when searching "what are timescales?" is "the time allowed for or taken by a process or sequence of events". However in film production a timescale is a lot more than just a "sequence of events", because this sequence of events defines whether or not someone gets to see their film distribute in a cinema or at a festival. This "sequence of events" tells every member of the crew and cast what they have to do at what time and how long they have to do it.

Timescales are so important during film making. If the pre-production hasn't been planned good then according to a time line that everyone is given it might mean that the costume department only has a week to do the whole of the casts costumes but it might take up to a month, or that the make-up department only have 10 minutes on each person every morning before filming but they need a lot more time than that because they have to completely transform them so then the film is believable. That is why time scales are so important to get right when film making or the film will go over a budget because they crossed a deadline, the film might look rushed and then disappoint the audience or it won't even get distributed because the crew and cast don't want to work on something so unrealistic.

One aspect of timescales is a production schedule. A production schedule is what will be done over a certain amount of time whilst film making and how much would be sent when in the production phase. A timescale comes up in every part of media whether your creating a TV show, film, piece of music, video game and many more.
The first thing that is usually done in a production schedule is the script writing. When that is done there will then be a shot list created which then helps to guide the director through the scenes, separating the scenes that need to be shot first to the scene that need to be shot later. When doing this an important part of it is to work out how much money is going to be spend on this one day and what crew members and cast members are going to be needed.

A production schedule links back to why timescales is so important because it helps to manage time and money before getting to the production stage. This is good because then you won't be stuck if something happens in the production because it should be all planned out with the budget in a good place and not going over and all the cast and crew have enough time to get ready and set everything up. Having a production schedule also helps for departments do go over deadlines because everything is planned out and nothing should be held back.

Clearances in materials means the process you go through to get permission, you need permission for; any sets used, the cast starring in your film, music if it is not copyright free, stock film, art posters, any brands mentioned or seen in the film, books, broadcasts, computer programs (if any has been used), dramatic works, and photographs.  Clearances need to be done when making a film so you do not get legally in trouble, your trademark isn't taken down and you have all the insurance needed when making your film.  For a review, you need to go to the attorney. The talent in a film is who stars in it. When you have a short film budget like £3000 over a big Hollywood film budget like £63000000 then you might not always see actors that you know. For a £3000 budget on the talent you could hire out 5 actors. For one male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. For another male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. Lastly for another male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. For one female actor you would have to pay her £15 per hour. For another female actor you would have to pay her £25 per hour. If they each work for 8 hours a day then in total it would cost you £560 per day. Therefore a week of filming would cost you £2800. If your budget has £3000 on each department then you could hire them all but if you wanted to save money on your production then you could use your friends or just have 2-3 experienced actors.
