LOGISTICS: TIME: AVAILABILITY OF PERSONNEL

A film crew is everyone who works behind the camera during a film production. A film crew can also be classed as a different part to not only the cast but the producers, because the producers own a bit of the film company and they aren't part of being on set and setting this up they held more with the distribution of the film. For the producers owning a part of the company that also means that you can only work with certain producers if you work for the company they own, therefore you can't pay any random producer to help you distribute the film if they don't work for the company that is helping you.
The crew can be very big on feature films so everyone is put into a "department". A "department" is all the different parts of the crew ranging from camera to make-up to lighting.

When on a small budget most people follow a "skeleton crew", a skeleton crew is the minimum amount of people needed to make a film.
These people mainly consist of:
  • Director of photography
  • Make-up and hair artists
  • Production assistant(s)
  • Sound recorder
  • Gaffer/ grip
These are the minimum amount of people to make a film because they can easily higher the standards of the film.

A director of photography is important to have because they can support and advise every member of the crew whilst the director can spend tie rehearsing and advising the cast members. Having a director of photography when being a new film maker is good because a director of photography has a very strong cinematography background which can help you a lot because they know what they are doing and they are trained to work on film sets.

Make-up and hair is also very important in the making of a film because a film plot won't be believable if the characters don't look in role. Having hair and make-up done is also good for the actor to fully get in role and be the character and not themselves in front of the camera. The hair and make-up is also good to have because it helps to set the era or the theme of the film.

Production assistants are very useful to have on film sets because they help the director with anything that he director needs. A production assistant is very helpful for the director on set as well because the director can't run around set trying to help everyone and be with the cast going through all the scenes before filming.

Sound is very important when making a film and that's why a sound recordist is very good to have. A sound recordist is in charge of all types of sound and all the equipment. Having high quality sound on your film will make it 100x better and clearer for the audience. Therefore, having a sound recordist is so good on a film set because when watching the film people will know whether to listen to a conversation between two characters or something that could help the film move along smoothly.

The last person mentioned on a skeleton list is a gaffer (also known as a grip). The gaffer will help you film to be as bright as possible or get the tiniest bit of light ever. When creating a film it is so important to have good lighting because it raises the quality of your film and also makes it clear when it's showing on the screen. A grip also helps the director and the rest of the crew out a lot because if you have a grip that means that no-one else has to worry about setting up the lights.

Two jobs that aren't on the list but are very important is a production designer and a script supervisor. If you have a bigger budget then you can easily add these people to your crew because they help out with a lot on a film set. A production designer helps out with how the film looks when making a set, picking a location, wardrobe, props and many other things. A script supervisor helps out with the director out with how the actors move in certain scenes. They also help out with wardrobe, props, hair and make-up and other things.

A skeleton crew is for a short budget film, whereas a big budget film can have a very big crew that involves everyone. Mainly always a skeleton crew will belong to a short film and a big expanded crew will belong to a feature film because of the budget sizes they are given and what they can afford with that budget.
A short film crew can consist of only the skeleton crew or it can have a few people added and still not go over the budget. The main people added to a short film crew are; a publicist, production manager, runner, costume designer, catering production design and stills. However, if these are all the people on the set most of the time of they are working for a short film these people are starting out in the film industry. This then means that they won't get payed as much as a film crew does in Hollywood or a film crew that is hired by a rich company like Disney.
Whereas, a feature film will always have a skeleton crew no matter if the budget is millions, thousands or just hundreds and many more members because of the big budget they are on, this also means that they can work with a-list celebrities and still not be going over their budget.

All the crew involved on a film set, whether the budget is big or small is very important because they will help you get the best quality film you can get with a budget that isn't going over what it's meant to.

Clearances in materials means the process you go through to get permission, you need permission for; any sets used, the cast starring in your film, music if it is not copyright free, stock film, art posters, any brands mentioned or seen in the film, books, broadcasts, computer programs (if any has been used), dramatic works, and photographs.  Clearances need to be done when making a film so you do not get legally in trouble, your trademark isn't taken down and you have all the insurance needed when making your film.  For a review, you need to go to the attorney. When doing this you need to provide the script. The talent in a film is who stars in it. When you have a short film budget like £3000 over a big Hollywood film budget like £63000000 then you might not always see actors that you know. For a £3000 budget on the talent you could hire out 5 actors. For one male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. For another male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. Lastly for another male actor you would have to pay him £10 per hour. For one female actor you would have to pay her £15 per hour. For another female actor you would have to pay her £25 per hour. If they each work for 8 hours a day then in total it would cost you £560 per day. Therefore a week of filming would cost you £2800.
