To get the right actors for your film you have to look at many people, from professionals to people who want to get into the film industry.

When looking at actors you have to be able to identify:
- The people who can learn but forget quickly, when there isn't a lot of filming time you need people to be quick learners.
- Be able to learn lines in a short time and be flexible to script changes.
- Be okay with changing their identity. You don't want someone who plays a character as themselves.
- To be able to change body language and shape without a problem.
- You always want to hire someone with acting skills and maybe eve dancing skills.
- They need to be a convincing fake person. You don't want a English actor who can't do an American character.
- To have good timing when delivering lines.
- You want someone who is aware of everything around them and how it may effect the way they perform.
- To be able to deal with public and press, you don't want to help someone in their career if they are rude and hated by many.
- They also need to be aware of health and safety of themselves and others around them.

What happens if you do not cast correctly?
Some people may just want to start out in acting but don’t have a qualification yet. Therefore, they wouldn’t get the job. They wouldn’t get the job because they have no experience and everyone who works on film sets whether its small or big all the actors have some form of experience or a degree in acting.
The person going for the role might not be what the director wants and imagines. They wouldn’t get the job because film involves looks and not just the acting, for example, if you cast an old lady to be a young child it wouldn’t work and the film will be unrealistic and look silly.
Look is an important thing in film so you might not be suitable for the target audience. For example, if an older person went for a role of a young girl she probably wouldn’t get it because she looks a lot older than what the director wants.
They might not have the time that they need to learn lines. The casting director will always know how much time someone needs to learn lines so they will never hire someone who needs a year to learn lines when the filming starts in a month, the casting director has to be realistic when picking the right actor.
They might not have any or little experience and the director might want someone who has a lot of experience and who is well trained and know what they’re doing. Especially on a feature film set because they will be showing the film to a big audience therefore, they will need someone who is well trained and ready to work in any environment not just work on a big film for experience. But this also goes for short films, they will never hire someone who isn’t trained because they mostly all want to get into the Hollywood film industry so the end product of the film need to be of a high standard not have someone who isn’t trained or ready to work on a set.

Stages of casting:
1. The director and producer will read and analysis the script.
2. They then break down each role into concise, descriptive profiles.
3. They then send it out to talent agents who then see if they have anyone who will fit the role.
4. The agents will then send head shots of their clients who match the description.
5. The director and producer then has to decide who gets a call back whilst the agents wait to hear from them.
6. The producer and casting director will also contact actors who fit the role and ask them to audition.
7. The casting director, producer and director them tape auditions so they can review them at a later stage.
8. They then review the auditions.
9. Actors who make it through the ‘first round’ then get a call back for a second audition.
10. The call back auditions also get taped so they are there for a later viewing by the casting director, director and producer.
11. All the steps are repeated until someone is hired for each role and everyone is happy with it.

What would be the consequences of:
Not allocating sufficient time for casting?
This would be a problem because if you don’t allocate sufficient time there is a lot that a casting director need to do, not just pick someone to play a role in a film, so if there aren’t enough time things can be rushed or just missed out so the end product of the film might not be as good.

Not beginning the casting process early enough?
If you don’t begin the casting process early enough you may realize that it will be rushed or a lot of good talent might not even be seen because there isn’t enough time. If this happens it will also put a lot of pressure on the casting director to pick people for certain roles in such a short amount of time.

Not hiring a casting director with sufficient experience?
If you don’t hire a casting director with good experience and you hire someone will little to no experience, then the end product might not be with who you imagined. A casting directors job is to have a wide knowledge of cinema and actors but also have an interest in film and on stage production, they also have to have a basic understanding of how to use a camera, be computer literate, good at communicating, know when there’s talent and when someone needs more time to improve and gain experience, have a good memory, excellent organisation skills, be able to focus on little details during someone’s audition, be able to give a take direction with no problem, have good knowledge on health and safety rules. So if you hire someone will little experience then they may get one of these things wrong however, if you decided to hire them then they could be really good at the job it’s just that no one gives them a chance.

The casting net not being cast widely enough?
If the casting isn’t casted widely enough then there will be the problem of missing talent. Also the casting director might be forced to pick someone from a small group but think that none of them have the potential or look for the role.
