LOGISTICS: MATERIALS: COSTUME
Having good costumes and costume designs in pre production is very important. Everyone who works in the costume department has a very important role of making sure that every cast member has a costume that fits nicely with the script. However, when the word costume is said ordaniry people mainly think of fancy dress or parties, they don't realise the importance of costumes and costume makers jobs. Costumes have two main jobs when on set, making a character believeable to the audience while following the script and making sure that it fits within the time era and everything in the frame.
Costumes has to tell a viewer who a character is, therefore, some designers love it when they get a big choice and they don't know what to go for until they get started and others love a small choice which is hard to pick between. However, the designer mainly follows what the director wants with their own take on the costume.
Costume designers main focus when making costumes is to make them believeable without drawing all the attention away from the actor, storyline and the main themes of a film. Colour is one of the main things that a costume designer and director use to tell an audience how a character is, along with material.
The angels are a very big costume design company. They are a private company who work with theatre, film and television all around the world. The company has been around for 7 generations with making over one million costumes and 8 miles of costumes all togehter. They work on any type of set wether its big or small with whatever budget.
The angels have lots of experience in big productions such as; Beauty and the Beast, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Dads Army, Emerald City, Brooklyn, The Mummy, Peaky Blinders (more than once), Taboo, Sleepy Hollow, The Collection, Victoria, Call The Midwife, Downton Abbey, Todd Margaret, The Vikings, The Royals, Poldark, Assassins Creed, London Has Fallen, Legends, Ripper Street, Theatre Royal Bath, ENO and The National Theatre.
What might be the impact of not allocating sufficient time and resources in pre-production to the costume needs of a film?
Costume designers help the look of the film come together, therefore if there is not enough time then things will be rushed or not finished. Therefore, if this happens then the film may go over budget or look rushed when its released.
They have to work with many people, much like the production designer and the hair and makeup team to make sure that everything fits together and goes well in a frame from different angles, therefore if this isn't done it may look unprofessional that's why there needs to be the right resources and time management.
If the right material isn't brought when making the costumes it could result in the film looking unprofessional and inaccurate if about a historical event, or it could turn viewers away because they don't like the look of it.
