LOGISTICS: PERSONNEL: TECHNICAL CREW
Every film needs an effective crew, it doesn't matter if you have a big or small budget, or if your professional director or a student, you still need a crew.
A crew should know how to time manage and not go over budget. If they didn't time manage and your budget has gone over then you know you do not have an effective crew.
Big budget:
On a big budget film the film maker can afford to work with professionals, therefore, the crew will be experienced and know how to do everything properly.
Medium budget:
On a medium budget you will not have every role filled like on a bug budget but that doesn't mean that you cannot work with professionals.
Low budget:
On a low budget the crew will be at different levels of experience but will still have some sort of educational background in film.
Micro budget:
On a micro budget the crew will have to take up more than one role. This may mean that they have experience in more than one role.
Producer:
During pre production they are responsible for putting the ideas into a realistic way, getting together a cast and crew and being responsible for all aspects of the film production.
It is important that you have a producer otherwise you might miss out a crew member or the film won't run smoothly because there wasn't a visual plan from the start.
Director:
The director is responsible for bringing the film to life. They do the casting with the producer, script editing and designing of the production. They also work with the actors and guide them on what to do.
If there is no director then the actors wouldn't know what to do, the producer would have to do all the casting by themselves and the script wouldn't be changed to make the film better.
1st assistant director:
The 1st assistant director will help the director with anything that they need, supporting the director with jobs like story-boarding and making sure everything is being kept to.
If the assistant director isn't there then the director would have to do a lot on their own and run around a lot more, however on low budget films there isn't always an assistant director.
Production designer:
A production designer will manage the visual elements of the film. They will work the the director and producer on a budget and schedule, lastly, they will help the art department with the initial designs.
If there is no production designer then the director and producer may struggle for a budget with the art department, the art department may also struggle when thinking of ideas for the designs.
Property master:
The property master is in charge of running the property department, they keep the props in check and make sure they fit with the theme of the film.
If there is no property master then the props maker has no one to check with and there will be no one in charge of the property department.
Prop maker:
This person is in charge of making all the props, researching props and adapting props that have already been brought.
If there is no prop maker then there will be no props on set which means the actors will have nothing in front of the camera.
Construction manager:
They supervise the making of the sets and stages for the film, they lead a team of carpenters, painters, craftsmen, riggers and plasterers. Lastly, they get all the tools needed but stay in the budget.
If there is no construction manager then the tools and the crew will not be hired and the sets or staging would not be made.
Director of photography:
The director of photography creates the visual look of the film, they work closely with the director, camera and lighting crew to achieve the films look and they manage all aspects of filming.
If there is no director of photography then there would be no one to design the visual look of the film or manage the filming properly.
Camera operator:
Camera operator is in charge of setting up all the camera equipment, working with the DoP and director to achieve shots for the film and managing the camera department.
If there is no camera operator then there is no one to be in charge of the camera and get good shots for the film.
Art director:
They give the film a look and feel from the designs they have been given, manage the art department and will undertake a role of production designer if on a small budget.
If there is no art director then the film won't become realistic and the art department would not be managed.
Assistant art director:
The assistant art director creates all the sketches and does the site surveys on the location they also supervise the constructions on set.
If this role isn't filled then the sketches wouldn't be done or the art director would have more to do also there wouldn't be supervision when constructing sets.
Costume supervisor:
The costume supervisor deals with all the costumes and is the main source of contact for hair and makeup, they supervise the costumes being made and construct budgets and time for costumes, hair and makeup.
If this role isn't filled then hair and makeup would have no source of contact also the costumes wouldn't be supervised and checked.
Costume designer:
They are in charge of making all costumes for the actors and extras. They organize everything to do with the costumes and make sure everything is in the budget.
If there is no costume designer then the costumes wouldn't be made and the department could easily go over budget.
Costume assistant:
The costume assistant has to order accessories that fit the costumes and take any instruction given to the by the costume designer and supervisor.
If no one is there to fill this role then the actors wouldn't have accessories and there would be no one to help the costume designer or the supervisor.
Makeup and hair designer:
They are in charge of all the application and look of the hair and makeup, they are also important because they lead the whole makeup and hair department.
If no one fills this role then the actors would have no makeup or have to do it themselves which means they could stay as themselves or it would be rushed and wouldn't look good.
Sound designer:
Sound designer is in charge of all the sound effects, create sounds that help the mood and feeling of each scene and they manage all sound during post-production.
If there is no sound designer then there would be no sound effects and the mood wouldn't be pushed by music in any of the scenes also the film would struggle in the post-production process.
Sound designer assistant:
They provide all support to the sound crew, check that the stock and power is there for the sound and makes sure that the sound department is run smoothly.
If this role is not filled then there would be no one to help the sound department also the little jobs like checking if everything is okay might be missed out.
Script supervisor:
They make sure that the script is being followed and are there if the actors forget their lines.
If there is no script supervisor then the film go go off track and it wouldn't run smoothly if there was no one to help the actors with lines.
Storyboard artist:
Lastly, a storyboard artist does the whole storyboard for the film to get an idea for the director to follow. When doing this the work with the director to help them see a vision and they do this on a storyboard or drawing software.
If there was no one to fill this role then the storyboards wouldn't be mad and the director would have nothing to follow when filming.
